Ted's
first encounter with having a fun life came
in 1983 when he went to Lake Louise, BC to be
a ski bum. He thought he would just learn to
ski, but he learned how to truly enjoy life
as well. He learned that not only was it possible
to have more fun, but that he could always have
fun, no matter what.
In 1985 he moved to Vancouver, BC. He worked
as a ski videographer, Frisbee instructor and
as a stand-up comedian. One afternoon a friend
came over to tell Ted of his plans to sell all
of his furniture and move to Alaska. Inspired
by his friend’s plans, Ted decided to
go out and have an adventure, too. He embarked
on an 8100-mile (13,000 KM) cycling journey
from Vancouver, BC to Key West, Florida and
back. This trip was the beginning of his writing
and illustrating career. That writing turned
into his first book, The Cycling Adventures
of Coconut Head, which became a Canadian best-seller.
Upon his return home, Ted convinced Brad Phillips,
the program director of Z95.3 FM, to hire him
as the new cycling traffic reporter for the
radio station. Ted rode over 12.500 miles (20,000
KM), reporting traffic from the streets of Vancouver
as the world’s first cycling traffic reporter.
Always
needing more adventure, Ted took off on a four-country
bike tour of England, Thailand, New Zealand
and Australia. He left Vancouver once again
to discover more of the world and what fun opportunities
it held for him.
Never one to stay in one spot for long, Ted
was soon trying different avenues of work. He
moved on to become a travel photographer for
Intrawest, taking pictures of resorts in the
United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. During
this time, he also was an actor in TV commercials
for Safeway, Telus and Hasbro.
In the summer of 2001, Ted was called back to
his love of writing and illustrating. He decided
to put the fifteen years of hands-on fun research
to the test. His new book, Gramma Knows the
F Word, is the culmination of his years of travel,
meeting new people and discovering what fun
is.
